In Their Own Words

Somchai Kraisingha
Retired civil engineer, Bangkok

"I attended the Behavioural Finance Reading in March. I went in thinking I already knew most of this — I have been managing money for forty years. What I had not done was examine the assumptions behind my habits. The session on loss aversion was uncomfortable in a useful way. I have thought about it many times since."

"The Cost of Living workshop was the first time anyone explained what those inflation figures actually mean in practice. I had read the Bank of Thailand reports before and put them down again because I could not connect them to anything real. The facilitator walked us through a worked example using a Bangkok household very like mine. That made the difference."

"I am now six months into the Slow Reading Programme. I was nervous about committing to six months — I have a busy schedule and have dropped things before. But the monthly rhythm works well. Three hours once a month is manageable, and the companion guides mean I am not arriving at the session unprepared."

"My honest review: I expected something more prescriptive. I wanted a checklist and I did not get one. After the second session of the Behavioural Finance Reading I began to understand why not. A checklist would have replaced one set of assumptions with another. What I got instead was the capacity to examine my own."

"The group size was what I noticed first. Six of us in a comfortable room. It felt nothing like a seminar. People shared things they were uncertain about and nobody made it feel like a problem. The facilitator listened as much as she spoke. I had not expected that."

"The Cost of Living workshop is the kind of thing a city should offer publicly and does not. Understanding what the CPI actually measures — and what it ignores — changed how I read economic news. The glossary they printed is still on my desk. I look things up in it occasionally."

Three Accounts in Greater Detail

ML
Malee Limjaroen, 53 — Accounting manager

The Situation

Malee had managed her household budget carefully for two decades but noticed she consistently postponed decisions she considered "big" — selling a flat she had inherited, moving a savings account she was unhappy with. She could not explain to herself why she kept postponing.

What Changed

The Behavioural Finance Reading gave her a framework for what she recognised as status quo bias and loss aversion. Seeing these described in literature she could read independently made them feel less like personal failings and more like well-documented human tendencies.

After the Programme

Malee did not describe herself as fixed, but she moved one stalled decision forward within two months of completing the programme. "I could see what I was doing. That was the part that had been missing."

"Reading about loss aversion in a book that someone had chosen carefully was different from encountering it in a listicle. It stayed with me."
TW
Teerasak Wongpan, 47 — Senior sales director

The Situation

Teerasak's employer arranged a company-wide financial seminar each year. He attended twice and came away each time feeling that the seminar had been designed to sell him something. He wanted a space to ask questions about inflation and household planning without being moved toward a product.

What Changed

The Cost of Living workshop was exactly the environment he had been looking for. The facilitator's declaration at the outset — that Kaew Capital holds no referral arrangements with any institution — removed a layer of caution that he had carried into every previous financial education experience.

After the Programme

He reported reading the Bank of Thailand's quarterly inflation release with greater confidence and shared the printed glossary with two colleagues who had been asking similar questions.

"The absence of a sales agenda is not a small thing. It changes the entire atmosphere of a room."
BP
Buppha Pattanaporn, 61 — Recently retired, former HR director

The Situation

Buppha had recently retired and found herself with more time to read than she had had in years. She wanted structured reading with other adults on subjects that mattered — not a book club, not a seminar, but something in between.

What Changed

The Slow Reading Programme fit naturally. She described the monthly rhythm as "the right pace for ideas to settle." The companion guides gave her enough structure to read actively rather than passively.

After the Programme

At the final session she said the programme had done something she had not expected: it had reconnected her with a kind of careful attention she associated with her working years but feared she might have lost in retirement.

"The calmest reading I have done in perhaps twenty years. That sounds like a small thing and it is not."
